What does our current Belgian energy landscape look like? What will a climate neutral society in 2050 look like? What does it take – from policy to innovation – to truly make this transformation happen? Since 2022, more than 200 EnergyVille researchers have been collaborating to answer those three pivotal questions. Time and time again, they gather the latest available input to draw data-driven maps for different scenarios – each of them describing a possible and feasible route for our journey towards a carbon neutral Belgium by 2050. Welcome to PATHS2050 Platform and the perspectives it generates. Perspectives which might just change your perspective on the energy debate.
In the context of the State Visit of Their Majesties the King and the Queen of the Belgians to Germany, the CEOs of Fluxys, OGE and Wintershall Dea have signed a cooperation agreement for CO2 transport. The three companies plan to build a cross-border pipeline to transport carbon dioxide with the objective to support the further decarbonisation of otherwise “hard to abate” industries in Germany.
Fluxys Belgium is a fully independent and neutral gas infrastructure company headquartered in Belgium. In this regard, the Belgian federal energy regulator has certified Fluxys Belgium as a transmission system operator of the natural gas transmission grid, the storage infrastructure and the LNG terminal infrastructure of Zeebrugge, in accordance with the full ownership unbundling model as per the European third package of legislative measures for the gas market. Fluxys is committed to bring the energy transition forward. The Fluxys assets are an essential complement to electricity infrastructure and serve as a cornerstone for secure, sustainable and affordable energy systems.
Four projects submitted by EnergyVille for the Energy Transition Fund, which falls under the authority of Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten, were recently approved by the Federal Council of Ministers. This is an important starting point for new and innovative research within a wide range of energy topics. The approved projects on which EnergyVille's research partners KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt will work are CIREC, CO2MBS, BeFORE-CAST, and DIRECTIONS. The duration of these projects is three years.
